Motorcycle Insurance – California Laws

Motorcycle liability insurance is mandatory in the state of California. As you probably know, liability coverage pays for damages incurred by third parties in accidents for which you are judged to be legally at fault. These damages could be injuries or property damage. The state has published the minimum liability amounts for which you must be covered. There are three minimum liability coverages outlined:

  • For Injuries to a Single Person: $15,000
  • For Injuries to Two or More Persons: $30,000
  • For Damages to Personal Property: $5,000

These amounts are actually quite low compared to the minimums dictated in many other states. This is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, lower coverage amounts translate to cheap motorcycle insurance in California – or at least cheaper than some states. On the other hand, lower coverage amounts mean higher risks that your insurance payout will not cover your total health care costs if you are injured by another motorist. Remember that the cost of health care and personal property often inflates at a rate faster than legislation is every changed.
